Influenza Epidemic 1918

In 1918, historian Alfred W. Crosby speculated the flu originated in Kansas. Popular writer John Barry echoed Crosby in describing Haskell County, Kansas, as the likely point of origin.

A large factor in the worldwide occurrence of this flu was increased travel. Modern transportation systems made it easier for soldiers, sailors & civilian travellers to spread the disease.

By the end of the pandemic, only one major region on the entire planet had not reported an outbreak an  isolated island called Marajó, located in Brazil's Amazon River Delta.

Political scientist, Andrew Price-Smith published data from the Austrian archived suggesting the influenza had earlier origins, beginning in Austria in the spring of 1917.

In New Zealand, the epidemic started in Auckland at the beginning of October, and quickly spread south to the other centres.

Sports Day/Heritage Waitaki

I took some photos at the Caledonian Grounds at Logan Park, I saw the Highlanders training at Logan Park, I bought a chocolate lamington from the canteen. I've wandered around the grandstand.

The weather is fine, but it's sunny, I took some photos near the track.

In the afternoon, I travelled to Oamaru on a courier van, with watching New Zealand Railscene on DVD.

Finally, I took some photos of the heritage buildings & a big bird topiary.

Changes at Bayfield High School

Stage one: When we come back from the holidays, we saw the archway had been demolished by Nash & Ross excavators. The re-development has been taking place, because the building was leaking, moldy and unhealthy! All the offices have been moved into the Music Department.

Stage two: Fences have been erected around the construction site because of health & safety issues, Hi-visibility vests & hard hats must be worn at all times. By Christmas, the new buildings will be probably finished.

Stage three: Watch this space.

This year at Bayfield, I'm a Year 13 student.

I will be studying new subjects are Deutsch and photography.

Mrs. Wilson helped me in Deutsch in Te Kura (The Correspondence School).

In Photography, I took some photos of trees and buildings.

We looked at National Geographic Magazines to find our favourite photos.
Callum and Mrs. Bruce do photography too.
Last Saturday, I took 75 photos & videos at the Otago Model Engineering Society (O.M.E.S.) and the Ocean Beach Railway.

I took photos and videos of models of British locomotives and rolling stock. I went outdoors and took one ride on a miniature railway.

In the Ocean Beach Railway, I bought a ticket and a magazine at the station, I took two rides in a second class carriage behind a real steam locomotive built by Kerr, Stewart and company. I went to Moana Rua and return two times.

I took a photo of the class shunting tractor TR 81 built by Drewry in 1939.

2015 Jordan's Blog

It's now 2015, I'm a Year 13 of Bayfield High School, I Put a badge on my blazer.

I had a seven weeks holiday.
I drew my Disney Air Lines/Kim Possible Air Lines aircraft.
I travelled to Naseby for a day trip via Middlemarch and return via Palmerston called the Pigroot (State Highway 85), we found some tadpoles from the swimming dam, caught them in a net, they all put in the boot in the car and then all the tadpoles were passed away.

On the 15th of January, I travelled on the TranzAlpine train from Christchurch to Greymouth and return, it's a part of KiwiRail Scenic Journeys. At Arthur's Pass there's an east side of a 5 1/4 mile (8.5 km) long Otira Tunnel.

On the 2nd of February, we had a severe thunderstorm watch, plus the lightning hit an Air New Zealand aircraft, had a 360 degree turn over Port Chalmers until Thunderstorm is over. The EAS (Emergency Alert System).
On Christmas Day, I unwrapped the DVD "New Zealand Railscene 44, The LEGO Movie", CD "Green Day - 21st Century Breakdown."

On 30th of December I unwrapped the DVD "New Zealand Railscene 45", LEGO City Train Station.

I enjoyed coming back to school to show all my friends my aircraft drawings. Mr. McCready thinks my drawings are getting better and better daily.
